FAQ
Can dermatologists perform surgery?Dermatologists often perform skin surgery. Benign, malignant, and cosmetic surgeries are routinely performed.
What is a dermatologist?
A dermatologist is a physician who has expertise in the diagnosis and treatment of patients with benign and malignant disorders of the skin, mouth, external genitalia, hair and nails, as well as a number of sexually transmitted diseases.
What do dermatologists treat?
Dermatologists treat skin cancers, moles, warts, fungal infections, eczema, psoriasis, acne, dry skin, contact dermatitis, and many other skin conditions. They also do cosmetic procedures like collagen injections, botox injections, lasers, and peels.
What is acne?
Acne is a disorder of the skin’s oil glands (sebaceous glands) that results in plugged pores and outbreaks of lesions commonly called pimples or zits. Acne lesions usually occur on the face, neck, back, chest, and shoulders. Nearly 17 million people in the United States have acne, making it the most common skin disease. Although acne is not a serious health threat, severe acne can lead to disfiguring, permanent scarring. This can be easily prevented with dermatology treatment.
What is psoriasis?
Psoriasis is a chronic (long-lasting) skin disease of scaling and inflammation that affects 2 to 2.6 percent of the United States population, or between 5.8 and 7.5 million people. Psoriasis occurs when skin cells quickly rise from their origin below the surface of the skin and pile up on the surface before they have a chance to mature.
What is rosacea?
Rosacea is a long-term disease that affects the skin and sometimes the eyes. Its symptoms include redness, pimples, and, in later stages, thicker skin. In most cases, rosacea only affects the face.
